Pentimenti is thrilled to announce that 4 Films by Suzanne Simpson is now available to stream digitally for free! Pentimenti restored and re-released the films theatrically between 2016 and 2018 at venues like the Museum of Contemporary Art, Block Cinema, Intuit Museum for Outsider Art, Ed Paschke Art Center, DePaul Art Museum, Hyde Park Art Center, and Chicago Movies and Music Festival. The collection features four long lost documentary shorts, each of which profiles an artist who spent formative time in California during the 1970s, including Mark di Suvero, Roy De Forest, Hassel Smith, and local legend Karl Wirsum, who was briefly a visiting instructor at the California State University Sacramento.
Virtually unseen for over four decades, Simpson's whimsical quartet of archival films captures these artists flourishing amidst the 1970s Bay Area art scene, when Funk art was thriving. The new soundtrack for Karl Wirsum, commissioned by Pentimenti and performed by musicians Alex Inglizian and Marc Riordan, was awarded "Best Original Soundtrack" at the Chicago International Movies and Music Festival. Newcity calls Karl Wirsum a “little-known cinematic gem [that] provides a rare opportunity to see into the Chicago Imagist’s West Coast oasis.”
